New Year, New Shows: 10 Amazing TV Shows Coming Out This Year
Get the popcorn ready!Everything may not be going well in the world right now, though we can all agree that we’re living in the golden age of television. With a slew of new streaming services putting some big money on production to vie for our attention (and credit card details) and more and more awesome TV shows hitting the air by the day, we can’t wait to see what 2019 has in store.
Here are the ten most awaited TV shows of 2019 you need to look out for.
Carnival Row
Amazon is persistently trying to grab its share of prime-time television (pun intended), and looking by the big-budget shows set to hit Prime come 2019, it looks like they’re serious about it.
Carnival Row, as explained by Amazon, is a fantasy noir series set in a neo-Victorian timeline, “Mythical creatures fleeing their war-torn homeland have gathered and tensions are simmering between citizens and the growing immigrant population.” Not much is known about it yet, but given its star-studded cast - including Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne, among others – and a unique premise, this is one show we’re not missing.
Black Monday
Are you into financial comedies, even if we just made that genre up? If you’ve seen Wolf of Wall Street and liked it, we’d say that you definitely are, and would like to introduce you to the upcoming Black Monday.
Produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, Black Monday is based on the events leading up to the global financial crisis of 1987 – one of the biggest ever – and who really caused it. There’s a lot of dark comedy, financial jargon and explicit scenes of drug-intake to be enjoyed in this one, though what really convinced us was Don Cheadle’s badass quote from the trailer, “I am black Moses and I am going to put the ‘brother’ in Lehman Brothers”.
What We Do In The Shadows
If you’re a fan of the low-budget-yet-surprisingly-hilarious horror mockumentary from New Zealand, What We Do In The Shadows, this television remake of the same name would check off all the right boxes.
The movie explored the humour behind a group of vampires living in the modern world, and the hilarity of the problems that arose from them being immortal. The show is set to expand on that idea, and with a much bigger budget.
Watchmen
Superheroes are usually the good guys. Watchmen was probably the first comic book series that twisted that concept and instead talked about how the lives of disgraced superheroes look like. There’s nothing glorious or heroic about these superheroes, and that’s what made the comics so good.
While the 2009 movie was never able to deliver the true essence of the comics, the upcoming TV show sure gives us hope. It’s produced and written by Damon Lindelof of Lost and Star Trek fame, and features, Regina King, Adelaide Clemens and Andrew Howard.
Sex Education
If British coming-of-age comedies are your thing, Sex Education should definitely be on your watchlist. The upcoming Netflix series follows Otis Thompson; a teenager who has never had sex himself, but - with the help of his mother who happens to be a sex therapist – gains quite a bit of knowledge on the matter. He goes on to setup an underground clinic in his school to help his fellow students out with their sexual issues.
While it’s still a light teenage comedy, the show aims to add to the serious conversation around sex education in schools.
Cosmos: Possible Worlds
The original Cosmos: A Personal Voyage by Carl Sagan in 1980 set a standard for science documentaries for years to come. Neil deGrasse Tyson’s 2014 follow up - Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey – was even better.Cosmos: Possible Worlds would take it to its second season, and looking at its predecessor, we’re in for a hell of a cosmic ride. While the 2014 season was more about explaining the existent concepts and theories, this one will be more hypothetical and speculative, as the name suggests.
Looking For Alaska
If you’re a fan of John Green’s various videos on YouTube and have no idea about his career as a successful novelist, this TV show based on one of his works would be a good place to start. Based on his bestselling book of the same name released in 2005, Looking for Alaska will be an 8-part miniseries loosely based on his own experiences in boarding school.
The show would be produced by Josh Schwartz of The O.C. fame, and looking at how long he has been trying to get this book to the big screen, it’s safe to say that we’re looking forward to this one.
Euphoria
While we don’t have as much information on it as we’d like, the description released by HBO says it ‘follows a group of high school students as they navigate drugs, sex, identity, trauma, social media, love and friendship.’
The best part? The show features Zendaya and is produced by Drake.
Good Omens
If you’re a fan of Terry Pratchett-esque satire and would love nothing than to see one of his best works come to television, Good Omens is all set to make that dream come to life. Based on the massively popular book by Pratchett and Neil Gaiman of the same name, Good Omens follows an angel and a demon who have to come together to save the Earth from the apocalypse.
The leads will be played by Michael Sheen and David Tennant, which assures us that this important endeavor is in good hands.
The Witcher
The Witcher will be based on Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels and short stories based on the Witcher universe.
Witchers are basically magically and chemically-enhanced monster hunters in a world overrun with monsters, though a defining characteristic of the books – as well as the games – is the lack of any clearly black or white characters. The series is known for its gray areas, something we’d love to see translated on the TV screen. Another one of Amazon’s high-profile launches for 2019, The Witcher will be released in late 2019.
