Burgers Bigger Than Your Face & Pizzas Bigger Than Your Table
Size matters. No, we’re not talking about some twisted version of Alice In Wonderland but a somewhat new joint in Kalkaji which has been getting all the social media attention ever. Curiosity got the better of us one evening and we found ourselves climbing the stairs to American Connection Diner.
Swinging By
It’s a pretty diner. There’s a good-looking bar with stools, booth seating and a pretty useless swing and low-couch table in the centre. The music’s a mix of loud Punjabi and English pop and it’s evident from first glimpse that the clientele of this place consists mostly of college students.
You soon realise it’s a desi version of the All American Diner and doesn’t quite stay true to its name. But what about the food?
Watch Out For Giant Burgers!
Since this is their claim to fame, it was obviously the first thing we ordered: The Brawler from the Monster Burgers section. This one was the mutton variant (they also have a chicken one and a veggie one). Weighing at what definitely felt like a kilo, this burger can easily feed upto 4 people with healthy appetites. However, the presentation was a little off and sloppy but it could have been a bad day. It was juicy, full of mayo and spices - a little bit like Kent but not as legendary, if you know what we mean. So if you’re good with a desi patty, this is for you but don’t go expecting gourmet at its best.
They also have 34 inch (not a joke) pizzas, which have a lot of takers. But again, you need to go in a large group or it gets pretty soggy just sitting there. It might be a hit with houseguests if you order this at home.
Get Your Freak(shake) On
Giant food calls for giant drinks and The American Connection Diner makes these really tall freakshakes which probably contain your entire week’s calorie requirements. But hey, life’s short. The Belgian Chocolate Strawberry & Marshmallow and the Coffee & Cookies ones are the bestsellers.
Orrr you could just get a few pints of your favourite beer (they have some good deals like three pints of Kingfisher for Rs 429). They also serve domestic wines at reasonable rates.
To Go Again?
IMHO, it’s a good place to go to if you’re looking to let your hair down with some brews and amp up your Instagram ratings with giant food but if you consider yourself a true connoisseur of food and have been exposed to the magic of tenderloin and pulled pork, you might feel the slightest bit let down. It seems more like an evening hang out for students who flock together in large groups.
